The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is establishing at its Faculty of Humanities a

W2-Professorship “Slavery and Dependency Studies” (5 years)

The professorship is a five-year fixed-term position and will be filled at the earliest possible date.

The future holder of the aforementioned professorship will be responsible mainly for conceptualizing and implementing an ongoing interdisciplinary project. The latter consists of research activities and teaching duties related to phenomena that reflect asymmetrical forms of dependencies in pre-modern times. The term dependency (Abhängigkeit) can encompass different meanings and thus fit into a broad range of context, e.g. forms of dependencies, corvée, serfdom, bondage, compulsory labour, and slavery.

Applicants must have a historical research focus and are expected to be expert in one region of Europe and/or the Mediterranean area.
Applicants must meet the requirements for the recruitment of the professorship according to § 36 HG NRW. These include: an academic degree (Master, Magister or State Examination), Ph.D. and habilitation or research achievements or those equivalent to habilitation. The research achievements must be related to a topic that is relevant for the research era. Furthermore, applicants must have experience in interdisciplinary and theory-based research at international level.
The position holder is also expected to teach; and it is desirable that he or she already has a working knowledge in acquiring funds for research projects.

Researchers from the following disciplines are cordially invited to submit their applications: Egyptology, Ancient Oriental Studies, Indology, Near and Middle Eastern Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Mongol Studies, Religious Studies, Sinology, South and East Asia Studies and Tibetology.

The position will be filled at the earliest possible date. After a successful evaluation, it is possible to turn the tenure track position to a permanent professorship.

The future holder of the aforementioned professorship will be responsible mainly for conceptualizing and implementing an interdisciplinary ongoing project. The latter consists of research activities and teaching duties related to phenomena that reflect asymmetrical forms of dependencies in pre-modern times among others.

Applicants must demonstrate deep knowledge of historical based research on development and/or of the building of theories related to international relations with a special focus on pre-modern societies.
